Classic Mini EV Conversions

Completed conversion and rectification experience informing the ongoing development of a more repeatable, serviceable Mini EV platform.
Discuss a Classic Mini conversion

Direct answer

What makes a good Classic Mini EV conversion?

A good Mini conversion controls mass and protects the car’s balance. VASS is also developing a more repeatable platform direction that concentrates major conversion hardware around a custom front-subframe package, while packaging, wiring and service access remain part of the complete vehicle design. This is ongoing platform development, not a fixed production-kit specification.

Who this is for

Focused support at the right project stage

For classic Mini owners and builders who want a considered road-car conversion, a review of planned components, or specialist help with battery packaging, wiring, controls and commissioning.

What VASS can help with

Defined engineering scope

  • Drivetrain and battery packaging for compact shells
  • Range, performance, mass and charging specification
  • Custom low-voltage wiring and original-control integration
  • BMS, HV protection, instrumentation and commissioning

Common problems solved

From uncertainty to a clear next step

  • Oversized components that compromise space and vehicle balance
  • Battery layouts with poor access, protection or axle loading
  • Original switches and instruments that are not integrated cleanly
  • Part-built Minis needing a clear electrical and controls plan

Completed conversion

1970 Classic Mini EV

A completed 35 kWh Mini conversion brought the drivetrain, battery, high- and low-voltage systems, charging and controls together within the compact original body.

Pre-electrified Mini troubleshooting

A Mini electrified elsewhere required 12 V wiring rectification, CAN debugging and work to establish reliable startup, charging and motor-system operation.

A more repeatable front-subframe package

Development is concentrating major conversion hardware around a custom front-subframe direction, with service access, overall mass, useful vehicle space, wiring simplification and repeatability considered together. This is not presented as a finished production kit.

Engineering approach

Compact packaging decisions are made together, so one system does not compromise another.

  1. Measure and define

The shell, vehicle condition, intended use and performance objectives establish the space, mass and system requirements.

  2. Package the conversion

Drivetrain, battery, charging hardware and service access are resolved around the Mini’s limited available volume.

  3. Connect old and new

High- and low-voltage systems, BMS, controls, instrumentation and original vehicle functions are integrated cleanly.

  4. Commission as a road car

The completed package is checked for predictable controls, charging, protection, diagnostics and practical serviceability.

For workshops & specialist builders

Conversion engineering that can fit a wider restoration programme.

VASS can define and deliver the EV systems scope alongside a workshop’s body, trim and restoration work. Early coordination helps protect packaging space, service access and the visual character of the finished Mini.

Frequently asked questions

Useful answers before an enquiry

A few clear answers to help you decide whether VASS is the right fit before getting in touch.

How is battery size chosen for a Mini EV?

Battery size is balanced against realistic range, available space, vehicle mass, performance and charging needs. More capacity is not automatically a better conversion.

Can the Mini keep its original appearance?

Much of the exterior and cabin character can be retained. The exact approach depends on controls, instrumentation, charging access and the condition of the donor car.

Can VASS support a Mini project started elsewhere?

Yes. VASS can review the current build and provide defined support for battery integration, wiring, controls, diagnostics or commissioning.
