Client goal

The problem to solve

Convert an original Defender TD5 to automatic while keeping the wiring professional, serviceable and suitable for refinement. The interior also needed a custom centre console solution to suit the automatic selector and upgraded cabin layout.

The brief

What VASS was asked to do

Integrate the automatic gearbox wiring into the original Defender harness, make sure the transmission controller received the required engine data, support gearbox software tuning and help develop the custom centre console package.

Scope of work

Defined engineering work

  • Professional transmission harness integration
  • Original wiring harness interface work
  • Transmission controller data checks
  • Gearbox software testing and tuning
  • Road testing and refinement support
  • Custom centre console development support
  • Interior scanning for fitment
  • Integrated subwoofer and selector packaging support

Key systems

Systems involved

  • TD5 engine ECU data
  • Automatic transmission controller
  • Gearbox wiring harness
  • Original Defender wiring harness
  • Custom full-length centre console
  • OEM-style GM gear selector packaging
  • Integrated audio/subwoofer layout

Engineering challenge

What needed careful resolution

  • Integrating new transmission wiring into the old Defender harness without making it messy or hard to service
  • Ensuring the transmission controller received the correct engine data
  • Fine-tuning gearbox behaviour after the electrical side was working
  • Creating a centre console that could fit multiple Defender interior layouts

Practical outcome

The result

The automatic conversion was electrically integrated and then tested so the gearbox could be refined. The centre console development also created a more complete interior solution that could be adapted for 90 and 110 Defender builds.

For similar clients

What this means for another project

This project is relevant for Defender owners who want modern usability without a full EV conversion. It also shows how wiring, transmission control, interior packaging and repeatable product development can be handled together.
